Who is Dr.
Walter Hofman?
Dr. Walter Hofman, the Montgomery County Coroner, is board certified in Anatomic, Clinical and Forensic Pathology. He did his pathology internship and residency at the Boston University and Harvard Medical School hospitals and
completed a fellowship in Forensic Pathology at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Baltimore.
Dr. Hofman practiced pathology at Roxborough Memorial Hospital for over 20 years and was twice elected Medical Staff President. He is presently also a designated forensic pathologist for the State of New Jersey.

This is the specialized practice of pathology as it pertains to the investigation of sudden, unexpected, unusual and traumatic deaths.

Hofman’s Biography
He is the former Chairman of Laboratory Medicine at Roxborough Hospital, Philadelphia.
He was full clinical professor of pathology at Temple University Medical School and associate clinical professor of pathology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
As a member of the Departments of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Washington, DC. for almost 25 years, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the US Air Force Reserve (USAFR).
He has been a member of the Montgomery County Medical Legal Committee for over 25 years and a past chairperson for almost 10 years.
He has personally performed over 10,000 (ten thousand) autopsies, examined over 16000 (sixteen thousand) bodies and issued more than 17,000 (seventeen thousand) death certificates.

- Dr. Hofman is the first board certified forensic pathologist to hold the post of Coroner in Montgomery County and the only board-certified forensic pathologist coroner in all of Pennsylvania.
- Dr. Hofman is one of only approximately 800 board certified forensic pathologists in the United States.
- He has worked in the Tri-state area for more than 35 (thirty five) years, as hospital pathologist, coroner’s pathologist and medical examiner.
- He is a respected national and international expert in the forensic sciences and has been involved in high profile cases all over the United States and Canada.
- He is a reviewer for the peer reviewed monthly publication “Military Medicine”.
- He is ethical, fair-minded and principled and has demonstrated the utmost compassion in dealing with families of the deceased.
Dr. Walter Hofman and his wife Ethel, a syndicated food journalist, have lived in Lower Merion for more than 35 years.
